Smith, Stephens & Luedtke Architects, Inc., was established in the summer of 1958 by Jim Smith and Tom Stephens as Smith and Stephens Architects. Having met at the University of Illinois, the founding partners teamed up to launch a firm that provided creative and highly competent design assistance to clients with a high degree of personal service.

During the past 48 years, the firm has been involved in numerous projects of various size and complexity, including banks, hotels, country clubs, medical office complexes, retail space and recreation centers. Regardless of the building type, SSL has continued its commitment to producing uncompromising quality in both design and detail, striving to produce the finest building obtainable within the needs and budgets of its clients.

In June of 2005, Eric Luedtke was named a principal in the firm after 11 years on staff, marking the first principal added since the firm’s founding. With this addition, the founders ensured that the firm’s commitment to excellence will seamlessly continue for many years to come.

In September of 2005, Mr. Stephens passed away, though his name, memory and spirit continue to be an integral part of the firm.
